Awesome Teacher 03/09/2010
 
Today I am here to remind you (and me) that you are an awesome teacher!  Please do not second guess yourself as you know your children better than anyone else, especially a stranger in a strange place that is the traditional school setting.  I don't know if it's because I have been homeschooling for some years now, but the idea of leaving your 5 year old with a complete stranger is just beyond me!  So with that being said, please don't hesitate and wonder how you're doing with your kids in the teaching department.  You are doing a great job!   TM : )

Your words are often so timely! I endured a conversation last week with some moms who just don't "get" homeschooling. And, one said she was counting down the days until she could send her precious 5yo off to kindergarten!! It breaks my heart, but I hold my tongue and thank God for calling me to homeschool my beautiful children! This conversation came on the heels of the decision to pull my high schooler out of public school (where he had been for just 1 year) and bring him back home for schooling. I'm so thankful for God's provisions that allow me to train up my children myself!!

I wanted to add that, just today, my son and I were talking to a retired public school teacher and she was actually very interested in the independent study home learners program that OC offers. I guess she is not one of those indoctrinated public school teachers that one often comes across (I used to live next door to one. She did not approve of us.)

This retired teacher told me that her granddaughter is in a public school and that it's just not a nice place. She loved the idea of what I was doing for my son and she never wagged her finger at me for not having credentials. I was grateful for that.

Yes, we homeschoolers ARE real teachers and we can do an awesome job of it! : )

Hi Tracy,

I was very encouraged Tuesday when I visited my children's former public school to have my older son videotaped about what his favoritie memory from Cub Scouts was. While there I ran into many moms I know who were asking me questions about homeschooling. One who is a former Kindergarten teacher told me her husband wants her to homeschool their two children next year. Another is considering it for her younger daughter next year and had some questions. Another, told me how her son is being teased and also suffering from worksheet burnout since that is what he spends his days doing with 32 kids in the classroom in 2nd grade. I saw another mom Thursday night at another function who also wants to hear more about what I'm doing and expressed the same concerns about busywork and class sizes. All in all this made me feel wonderful that my children did not suffer through this year at that school and that I made the right decision to bring them home. Thank you for your blog and encouragement.
